Forward Momentum: Crafting a Path to Achievement in 90 Days

Updated: Jan 5

Every year, millions of individuals and businesses set new goals and resolutions, yet for the vast majority, these aspirations fall short. The issue isn't a lack of good intentions but rather, a deficit in strategy. Three key flaws often thwart success in goal implementation, and in addressing them, leaders can cultivate a path to achievement.

To begin, it's critical to recognize the uniqueness of each individual's thoughts, actions, and responses to their environment. What works for one person may not necessarily yield the same results for another. As the adage goes, "One size doesn't fit all." Leadership experts and successful individuals often herald this principle, shaping their approach by adapting strategies to fit the nuances of the individuals they seek to empower.

The second pitfall lies in oversimplified goal setting. Using OKR's (Objectives & Key-Results) or the SMART framework (specific, measurable, achievable, results-focused, time-bound) to devise goals is certainly valuable, yet it only presents a blueprint rather than a roadmap for actual implementation. While the framework paints a clear picture of what needs to be done, leaders must also carve out a detailed path for how they will achieve their objectives. Clear implementation strategies enhance the likelihood of goal attainment by providing a structured method for progress evaluation and adjustment.

Successful goal implementation demands tactical planning. In a world characterized by constant change and incessant distractions, a lack of strategy and execution stifles progress and leads individuals down pathways of ineffectiveness. Crafting a robust strategy enables leaders to maintain focus amid the deluge of competing demands and maximizes their chances of achieving their goals.

One of my former mentors, Todd Herman, said, "90 days is the horizon to our motivation." I have found this in my own work with business teams, underscoring that goals beyond this timeframe often breed procrastination. By setting short-term goals, individuals incrementally reinforce their momentum and motivation, ensuring steady progress and continuous growth.

Reflecting back on the past year provides an invaluable opportunity to gain insight and instill lessons learned. It's imperative to ask: What were my major accomplishments? What lessons have I gleaned? What opportunities slipped through my fingers? What actions should I prioritize for the upcoming year? This introspection fuels the foundation for establishing a potent system to implement the first 90-day goal.

The triumphant execution of a 90-day goal hinges on the establishment of a clear and compelling outcome. Defining a singular outcome that excites and motivates, and then identifying the strategies and action steps to realize it, serves as the bedrock for successful execution.

Strategies should align with a timing intervention, allowing for periodic reflection and course correction. When bolstered by a structured progression of action steps that helm daily tasks, leaders can sculpt a clear path toward success and confidence while operating on their own terms.

Sharing this 90-day roadmap with a trusted accountability partner serves as an added catalyst for success. This external support adds a layer of urgency and commitment, driving heightened focus and diligence.

As we map out a precise system that aligns with our ambitions and bolsters our mindset, strategy, and action steps, we begin steering our own agendas. By doing so, we build formidable momentum that catapults us closer to our aspirations, setting ourselves up for triumph.
